By the winter of 2019, I had begun getting ready to begin online courses. So, when March 2020 rolled around, I was ready. I asked a group of writers who had all worked with me in one context or another, if they’d like to be part of a weekly online group.
What began in April of 2020 became an extraordinary example of creating within community. The first group was so successful that I began a second in May of that year. What I thought would be a temporary way of meeting and connecting began to seem deeper and more necessary for everyone involved. In January 2021, I began a third group.
The format is simple: we begin with a check in where folks share what happened with their writing during the week, any particular challenges or triumphs or questions. Then half the group shares new writing with three other participants providing feedback. I respond to each share.
These are not crit groups. They’re process groups. People bring in writing at various stages from first draft to revision to polish. The impact has been remarkable–it’s given me a way to shepherd writers and their work forward, and provided a beautiful way for writers to make connections that are deep and supportive.
I keep a waiting list so if someone drops out, I can add to the group. Capacity is limited to 8 people. The groups are $300 for a six week session.
